Glassblower wanted

We are a busy and diverse shop in the heart of the SF Bay Area looking for a full-time glassblower familiar with working borosilicate glass. We need a team member who is self-directed, responsible, and flexible. We are looking for someone who has advanced skills in production glassblowing, but we also understand that glass shops have idiosyncratic processes and techniques; we expect to train at all levels.

Good fit is essential.The ideal candidate will have a great work ethic, be able to follow verbal instructions and procedures, read and interpret drawings, communicate effectively, and produce outstanding glassware. We maintain a commitment to quality.

Manager, Glass Technology Shop

University of Minnesota – Twin Cities Campus

Department of Chemistry

 

We are seeking a part-time position, with the exact percentage subject to negotiation with candidates. Start date: October 2013 The purpose of Glass Technology is to provide the laboratory glassware needs of University and non-University scientists and researchers. Glass Technology is a one-person shop, therefore the manager is responsible for all operations.

 

Required Qualifications:

Completion of an apprenticeship in a specialty glassblowing shop and experience constructing specialized glass apparatus totaling eight full years.

                         

Preferred Qualifications:

Proficiency in constructing complex borosilicate and quartz glass apparatus. Familiarity working in an academic or industrial research setting. Candidates will be required to construct a complex quartz piece and a complex borosilicate piece based on a provided assembly drawing as part of the interview process to demonstrate skill and proficiency.

 

Duties:

 

75% - Glassblowing Activities. Glassware Design or design modification in accordance with customers’ needs. Fabrication of new laboratory glassware. Modification/Customization of existing glassware. Repair of broken glassware

 

15% - Administrative Activities. Customer consultation in person, by e-mail, phone or fax. Cost and date of completion estimates. Packing and Shipping of outside orders. Invoicing customers to Chemistry Accounting. Keeping records

 

10% - Equipment Maintenance & Repair. Maintaining, Ordering, Pricing and Stocking Inventory.. Maintaining, repairing, ordering and installing new machinery and tools such as Lathes, Burners, Torches, Saws Grinding Machines. Maintaining a Safe Work Environment

The UMN Glass Technology Shop serves anyone on the UMN-Twin Cities campus, as well as off-campus clients. The shop is located in Smith Hall within the Department of Chemistry. The department has 40 faculty, 40 staff, 50 postdoctoral associates and 239 graduate students. Located in two adjacent buildings, our substantial research and teaching missions are carried out lab throughout the department.
