Key Focus

  • To design, fabricate and repair lab glassware for the PDC and other Albemarle sites.
  • Understand complex chemistry experiment to provide most efficient glassware desgn.
  • Provide quality glassware in a timely manner as requested by the engineers and chemists.

Accountabilities

  • Operate glass shop efficiently and maintain all equipment in good working order.
  • Maintain an adequate inventory of spare parts.
  • Produce and deliver custom design glassware in a timely manner to satisfied customers.

Responsibilities

  • Safety - both personal and safety in fabricating and repair of glassware but also to provide quality glassware with regard to safe construction.
  • Purchase and maintain adequate inventories of spare parts.
  • Maintain glassware fabricaiton equipment.
  • Continue education of glassware fabrication techniques such as participation in the American Scientific Glassblowers Society.
  • Provide design advice to chemists and engineers that will improve success of their experiments.
  • Bring creative ideas and suggestions to customers.

Experience:

  • 10 yrs glassblowing experience; both production shop and research shop experience.

 

Summary of Duties:

  • Fabricate complex custom designed scientific glass and quartz apparatus and systems. Must be able to work with flasks up to 22 liters in volume and tubing up to 220mm OD.
  • Confer with professional chemists and engineers on the design or modification of glass systems and provide technical advice on properties and fabrication of glass systems for all Albemarle sites worldwide.
  • Modify and or repair custom made or standard laboratory glassware.
  • Operate glassblowing shop including maintaining equipment and inventories of shop supplies.
  • Design and fabricate jigs and holders.
  • Maintain current knowledge of new methods and materials in the field of scientific glassblowing.
  • Maintain inventory of recycled glassware and supervise washing of all glassware. Maintain KOH bath.
  • Track all Glass Shop requests filing reports quarterly. Publish highlights quarterly.
  • Be knowledgeable of silver plating and evacuating glassware. Know how to plastic coat glassware.
  • Give each new Albemarle employee and orientation of Safe Handling of Glassware.
  • Mercury Steward - Maintain inventory of new mercury. Be able to remove mercury from old instruments and store for recycling. Maintain inventory of mercury mercury spill kists. Know how to clean up mercury spills safely.
  • Present off-site glassblowing demonstrations.

Educational Requirements:

  • High School Diploma and attendance at Salem County College or documented apprentice program.

We are currently looking for experienced Scientific Glassblowers skilled in both quartz and borosilicate to join our growing team.  The successful candidates will be responsible for manufacturing a wide array of quartz and borosilicate glassware products, made to very precise tolerances.  Individuals should have at least 3-5 years of quartz experience including experience in grinding, forming, rectifying and cutting.  Our products are made on both high precision lathes and bench burners.  The ability to read and follow dimensional drawings is a must.

Job Opportunity

Rosemount Analytical, a Division of Emerson, is a leader in the development of Process Analytical Equipment i.e. Liquid Analyzers and Sensors. We have an immediate opening for a Scientific Glass Specialist.

 

The ideal candidate will be responsible for the development of glass processes for new and special products, glass design or redesign of products, including cost estimates, reduction of manufacturing costs and improved performance. Continuous improvement of existing glass processes and technical support for glass operations will also be a key assignment.  Candidate will provide material estimates, methods documentation and time requirements for production of internal and external parts and assemblies.  Must provide documentation of special products for assembly, customer requirements and for future reference.

 

Requires proficiency and knowledge in scientific glass manufacturing and engineering drawings.  Lean Manufacturing and Kanban Inventory Management are desirable.  Must have ability to work effectively with other departments such as Marketing, R&D and Manufacturing. AA degree in Scientific Glass Technology preferred with 3-5 years related experience.
